Timpani

Audition programme: two pieces of contrasting character (etudes, concertos, solo pieces, cadenzas, sonatas, sonatinas), chosen by the candidate; two orchestral excerpts of candidate’s choice.
 
Course objectives and content: The course will study the symphonic and opera repertoire, from the Baroque to the contemporary, with special attention to technique, sound, intonation, as well as instrument care and maintenance. The orchestral excerpts and obligatory pieces most requested in auditions and competitions will be studied in greater depth.

ANTONIO CATONE

Antonio Catone has been principal timpanist in the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia di Roma since 1999.
Earlier, he held the same position for ten years at the Orchestra del Teatro San Carlo in Naples, where he won the xylophonist-percussionist competition. Born in 1971, he studied at Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples, earning a diploma cum laude.
He led the Cameristi del San Carlo, and as guest first timpanist he has worked with the Orchestra della Radio Svizzera Italiana, the Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, and the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala. He performed Bela Bartok’s Sonata for two pianos and percussion in the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia chamber music season (Martha Argerich and Nelson Goerner were the pianists). He has served on panels in national and international competitions (Teatro alla Scala, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Premio Nazionale delle Arti, etc…).

From 2007 to 2014, he taught percussion instruments in the orchestra preparation course at Associazione Amici della Musica Fedele Fenaroli in Lanciano. He also taught the open specialist course in timpani at Conservatorio L. Refice in Frosinone. He is frequently invited to hold master classes, seminars, and master courses at conservatories and musical associations.
He has worked with such conductors as: Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Daniele Gatti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Valery Gergiev, Gustavo Dudamel, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, Alan Gilbert, Kurt Masur, André Previn, Daniel Barenboim, Ivan Fisher, Yuri Temirkanov, Fabio Luisi, Ton Koopman, Vladimir Jurowski, Myung-Whun Chung, and Antonio Pappano.
