Woodwinds & Brass, Timpani & Percussions

Woodwinds & Brass and Timpani & Percussions are the master programmes aimed at  instrumentalists holding degree diplomas and in possession of outstanding performance skills.
The courses are taught by the Principals of the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
The course duration of each course is one academic year. Following regular course attendance, a certificate of attendance will be issued upon request.

ADMISSION
1. Admission requirements
- Courses are open to students of any nationality;
- Candidates must hold a Conservatory Diploma (old system) or a First or Second level Academic Diploma earned in the discipline for which they are applying.
- age not exceeding 30 years (35 years for students in the Timpani and Percussion courses).
 
Exceptions to these requirements may be permitted only in exceptional cases, in the case of special, recognized artistic qualities and subject to the evaluation and approval of both the teacher and the President of the Accademia.
Candidates who meet the above requirements will be admitted to courses as regular students, provided they have passed the entrance examination.
The courses are open to the enrolment of auditors, upon presentation of an appropriate academic/artistic CV and subject to the approval of the course’s instructor.
 
2. Applications for admission
The applications for admission, made online using the form, must be received by the Accademia offices (Segreteria didattica) by no later than the following dates:

Proof of successful application will consist of an email notification sent by the Fondazione, which the applicant shall produce on the day of the examination.

For active students
·        a copy of your diploma certificate; 
·        your artistic CV with a specific list of repertoire;
·        a photocopy of your passport or identification document;
·        the examination programme you have chosen;
·        proof of payment of the examination admission fee.
 
For auditors
·        your artistic CV;
·        a photocopy of your passport or identification document.
 
3. Entrance examinations
The entrance examinations will be held, in accordance with the published calendar, at the Academy’s headquarters at Via Vittoria 6 (Rome), except for the Timpani and Percussion examinations, which will be held at Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale Pietro de Coubertin, 10 (Rome). 
 
4. Entrance examination programmes
Clarinet
Debussy, Premiere Rapsodie for clarinet and piano; orchestra excerpts: Beethoven, Symphony no. 4 and Symphony no. 6
 
Trumpet
One piece of applicant’s choice between Haydn, Concerto in E-flat major and Hummel, Concerto in E-flat major; a second piece of applicant’s choice between Honegger, Intrada and Enesco Legend; Orchestral excerpts: Donizetti, Don Pasquale (Solo); Moussorgsky. Pictures at an Exhibition (Promenade); Stravinsky, Petrushka (Solo), Mahler, Symphony no. 5 (opening solo).
 
Oboe
A Concerto and a Sonata of different periods and styles, of applicant’s choice; two orchestral excerpts of applicant’s choice.
 
Flute
Two pieces (Concertos or Sonatas or pieces for solo flute) of different periods and styles, at least one of which with piano accompaniment, and two orchestral excerpts of applicant’s choice, also of different periods and styles.
 
Horn
A first movement of a horn Concerto or Sonata, and two orchestral excerpts of applicant’s choice.
 
Trombone
Two pieces of different styles, of applicant’s choice; three orchestral excerpts of applicant’s choice.
 
Bassoon
Mozart Concerto K 191 and a piece from of a different style and period, of applicant’s choice; orchestral excerpts: Ravel, Bolero and Donizetti, L’elisir d’amore.
 
Timpani
Two pieces of contrasting character (√©tudes, concertos, solo pieces, cadences, sonatas, sonatinas), of applicant’s choice; two orchestral excerpts of applicant’s choice.
 
 
 
Percussion
Two pieces of contrasting character (etudes, concertos, solo pieces, cadenzas, sonatas, sonatinas), chosen by the candidate; two orchestral excerpts chosen by the candidate.

The pieces planned for the entrance examinations must be prepared in full; the Examination Panel reserves the right to ask the performance of all or part of the submitted programme. Performance from memory is not mandatory but is recommended and will be one of the criteria of the final assessment.
The Accademia will provide applicants with a piano accompanist: in this regard, applicants should appear for the examination carrying the music for their examination programme, including the parts for the piano accompaniment where applicable, as well as a valid identification document.
 
FEES FOR ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS AND ATTENDANCE
Active students:
€ 70.00 Entrance examination;
€ 1,200.00 annually for each course; 
 
Auditors:
- € 350.00 annually.

Proof of payment of attendance fees must be delivered to the Academic Secretary (Segreteria Didattica) by no later than thirty days from the start of the lessons, under penalty of exclusion from the course.
Absence from lessons or entrance examinations shall not entitle the student to any refund.
 
Attendance fees include:
Active students
• 10 sessions with own instructor, 3 of which with the assistance of a pianist
•  mock auditions
• concerts and final recitals in the halls of the Auditorium Parco della Musica;
• opportunity for involvement n the artistic activities of Ensemble Novecento;

The teachers will indicate to the artistic management of Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia the active students who have particularly distinguished themselves during course attendance, for possible collaborations with the Orchestra and/or possible inclusion in the Fondazione’s artistic productions.

Auditors
• auditing of the courses’ lessons with the possibility of one brief meeting/audition with the instructor during the year;
• possible involvement in group activities, at the instructor’s discretion.

Entrance auditions
Entrance auditions will be held in Rome, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale Pietro de Coubertin, 10. 
The programme All pieces must be prepared in full, and the concertos and solo works should preferably be performed from memory. The Examination Panel, at its sole discretion, may ask applicants to perform all or part of the examination programme. The Accademia will provide applicants with a piano accompanist: in this regard, applicants should appear for the examination carrying the music for their audition programme, including the parts for the piano accompaniment where applicable, as well as a valid identification document.
