“I Fiati” is a programme of master courses for wind and brass instruments organized by the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. This programme, aimed at talented musicians with clear performing skills, offers specialized professional training through one-to-one and collective lessons. The courses focus on the analysis of technical problems peculiar to each instrument, repertoire study and the development of practical skills, such as body awareness and emotional control, required for a professional career in music.
All courses are taught by Principals of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra.

Audition programme: a piece of applicant’s choice with piano accompaniment and one solo orchestra excerpt of applicant’s choice.
Course contents:
Development of technical and musical skills, with particular emphasis on breathing techniques. Repertoire study from baroque to contemporary music. Special attention shall be given to the study of solo orchestral excerpts and the preparation of auditions and competitions.

Course contents:
Study of the most important pieces from the solo, ensemble and orchestral repertoires. Solution of technical problems through personalized study methods, with focus on breathing techniques and reed making.

Course contents:
Study of the most important concertos and orchestral excerpts for clarinet. The course shall focus on the development of technical skills aimed at improving the quality of sound and staccato.

Course contents:
Analysis of technical problems peculiar to the instrument and the development of possible solutions. Interpretation of solo pieces and orchestral excerpts with focus on programmes that are more frequently requested in auditions and competitions

Audition programme: one of Mozart’s 4 Concertos of applicant’s choice; Tchaikovsky, Symphony n. 5 ( 2nd movement); Beethoven, Symphony n. 9 ( solo of the 4 horn).
Course contents:
The Italian style. Sound, phrasing and virtuoso playing.

Entrance Requirement
The master courses are open to musicians of all nationalities holding a music diploma in the instrument for which admission is requested. Applications from candidates who are not in possession of the requested title, but, according to teachers, have exceptional musical and performing skills, may be accepted.
Final admission to courses as active students is subject to an entrance audition. It is also possible to attend courses as auditors.
The total number of active students admitted shall be at the teacher’s discretion.
Applications must be submitted on-line to the Segreteria Didattica by the above indicated deadlines, using the registration FORM published on the Academy’s web-site, www.santacecilia.it, on the “Master Courses” page. Notification of receipt shall be forwarded to applicants by e-mail; applicants are requested to produce such notification on the day of the audition.

Attendance fees comprise:
ACTIVE STUDENTS
• 12 sessions with the course teacher of which 5 with the collaboration of a pianist;
• mock auditions;
• participation to concerts and end-of-year performances in the halls of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome;
• opportunity of involvement in the artistic activities of the instrumental Ensemble of the Academy’s master courses;
• opportunity to attend the rehearsals of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra;
• free use of the rooms at the Academy’s headquarters of Via Vittoria for hours of individual study.
Teachers will mention to the Academy’s Artistic Management those active students who shall have particularly excelled during course attendance for possible collaborations with the Academy’s Orchestra and/or inclusions in the artistic productions of the Foundation.
AUDITORS
• attendance of course lessons with the possibility of fixing a meeting/audition with the course teacher during the year;
• at the teacher’s discretion, auditors may be involved in possible ensemble activities.
