The project

The initiative to establish a master programme in opera singing, aimed at fostering the professional training of young and talented singers, stems from the need to safeguard the legacy of an extraordinary cultural patrimony, that of Opera and "Belcanto", a treasure of the Italian culture from the beginning of the seventeenth century onwards, that is now in danger of being lost throughout the world. The poor condition of singing schools, not always able to give young singers a correct preparation, the too many and often useless singing competitions, the difficulties met by artists to start a career in the opera world and the hardships often faced by opera houses to put together top level singing companies are all evident signs of this profound crisis. Nonetheless, our country continues to attract numerous young artists coming from all over the world in the search of proper tuition.

The Santa Cecilia National Academy, taking up this crucial challenge, has established Santa Cecilia Opera Studio, a programme of master courses aimed at completing every aspect of opera singers' professional training, from musical interpretation and vocal technique, to acting and movement, correct diction and repertory choices, in view of starting a career in opera. An important part of the training is the creation of work opportunities for the most deserving students, thanks to the numerous artistic activities programmed throughout the year, among which fully-staged operas, and collaborations with theatres and festivals in Italy and abroad. The intention is also one of protecting young, talented singers from a "market" that often ruthlessly exploits them. One notable reason for the current vocal "crisis" is, in fact, the premature wearing out of many talented young singers' vocal means because of wrong repertoire choices, especially at a delicate time such as the beginning of their careers.

Since the first session held in May 2004, the young singers who have attended the Santa Cecilia Opera Studio courses have been over 500, coming from all over the world.

The increasing interest arisen around the Santa Cecilia Opera Studio project has brought to the realization of the documentary film Renata Scotto. The theatre in music produced by RaiSat Extra and dedicated to the great singer's activity both at Santa Cecilia and at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

In June 2010, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia has promoted a collaboration with the Orchestra of the Italian Music Conservatories and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples for the staging of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. The company of singers was entirely made of Opera Studio singers. The opera was staged on the 1st and 3rd June 2010 at the Sala Petrassi of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, with great success of public and excellent reviews. A DVD of the performances was made with the support of Infocamere.
