Piero Monti - Chorus Master

Born in Faenza in 1957, in 1979 he graduated from Florence’s Luigi Cherubini Conservatory with top marks in Choral Music and Choral Conducting. That same year, he won a competition at Teatro Comunale di Bologna to become a musical assistant and, in 1983, was made the stage musical Director.

In 1988, at Riccardo Chailly’s invitation, he took over the Chorus’s direction, and for 15 years prepared the ensemble for productions, recordings, and tours with conductors Riccardo Chailly (1988-1993) and Daniele Gatti (1997-2002), with principal guest Conductors Christian Thielemann and Vladimir Jurowski, as well as all the guest conductors (including Solti, Abbado, Chung, Gergiev, Muti, Pappano, and Sinopoli.) In 2003, he was invited to Venice’s Teatro La Fenice, where he also took part in productions for the inauguration of the reconstructed theatre (conducted by Muti and Maazel), in collaboration with the conductors Viotti, Gardiner, Marriner, and Prêtre. From December 2004 to December 2012, he conducted the Chorus of Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, where he prepared conductor Zubin Mehta’s numerous productions and had the opportunity to collaborate with such other musicians as Ozawa, Bychkov, Hogwood, and Maazel.

In 2008, he was selected by Vladimir Jurowski to merge the two London choirs – the Philharmonia Chorus and the London Philharmonic Choir – for a total of 240 choristers, performing Verdi’s Requiem with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In Paris in 2013, he prepared the Radio France Chorus for Verdi’s Requiem conducted by Daniele Gatti; in 2014, he returned to conduct Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle in the national television channel’s new Auditorium. In 2014, he prepared Dresden’s Semperoper Choir for a production of Turandot. From 2013 to 2019, he was Chorus Master at Palermo’s Teatro Massimo.
