“It’s nice when an idea gains so many consents. Dedicating an important contest of musical composition in memory of Luciano Berio seemed to everybody a great opportunity to pay tribute not only to an extraordinary musician but also to one of the most prominent intellectuals of the XX century. The National Academy of Santa Cecilia, together with the maximum Italian musical Institutions with whom Berio had strong, important and long-standing ties, is proud to present this project, which brings together all the excellences around the figure of an artist that has been very meaningful for the history of Santa Cecilia and, above all, for society. A jury of uncontested international prestige chaired by Antonio Pappano, a great editor as the Universal Edition, the SIAE and the enthusiastic and convinced support of Talia Pecker Berio and her family, which I thank on behalf of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia for kindly allowing to name the competition after Luciano Berio, mark the occasion as a top event for new music and for the musical culture of our country, and not only.”

“It’s with emotion and solemnity that I greet, also on behalf of my family, which I represent, the start of the International Composition Competition «Luciano Berio», promoted by the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in collaboration with the Study Center Luciano Berio. The project is of mutual dignity:  one related to the oldest Italian musical Institution and the work of a musician who personified the contemporaneity without limits, the dialectic between eras, genres and places; one which is related to the glorious concert tradition and of those who wanted to project it into the future; one of a noble ‘home of music’ of those who, with tenacity and foresight, have accompanied it in the modern abode of a ‘park’ open to all. The set-up of the Competition, with a mixed and genuinely cosmopolitan jury and the consortium of different Institutions, reflects the spirit of Berio, who believed in dialogue and collaboration as guiding principles of life. Scheduling in the 2020/21 season one of his most meaningful symphonic works will be the direct expression and representation.
Organizing in the same season a study meeting coordinated by the Luciano Berio Study Center will represent an indispensable time to reflect upon the meaning and importance of Berio’s work, as promoter of a universal idea of music. Work that had its last and important stage right at theAcademy of Santa Cecilia.”
