Ascribed to Stravinsky's so-called neoclassical period, Oedipus Rex is an opera-oratorio based on the tragedy by Sophocles. As the composer intended it, the ancient subject, and above all the choice of Latin and of the oratorio over the scenic form, aimed to provide a sense of a sacredness set in stone. The performance calls for a narrator - in this case Massimo De Francovich - who comments upon, explains, and anticipates the events, while in their immobility, the characters in the Sophoclean tragedy, given voice by the vocal soloists, symbolize the hieratic and static nature of ancient times. The music's rhythmic structure is based on the feet of classical meter. Sakari Oramo, making his return to Santa Cecilia on the heels of his great success several seasons ago, adds yet another classical complement to the great classicity expressed by Stravinsky's masterpiece, with Haydn's Symphony no. 22 ("the Philosopher"). The stand-out voice cast includes Sonia Ganassi, Mati Turi, Marco Spotti, and Alfred Muff. As always, the Chorus - here only the men's section - is led by Ciro Visco.
