  • Saint-Saëns Concerto per violoncello n. 2
  • Berlioz Sinfonia Fantastica

A broad overview of nineteenth-century French music, through three of the period's most representative composers, from the symphonic poem, one of the genres most characteristic of the Romance period, to the timbric and harmonic innovations of the early twentieth century. From Berlioz to Debussy, without neglecting a giant of French musical tradition, Saint-Saëns, defined by Proust as an "inspired genius of music, endowed with a profound sensitivity." In Symphonie fantastique - a musical narration of the "life of an artist" - the emotional events in Berlioz's ill-fated love for Irish actress Henriette Smithson are entwined with passion, youth, and romantic ideals; in this blending of art and life, the music acquires a theatrical rhythm marked by scenes suggested by the narrative programme indicated by the composer, who offers major innovations for the time in the instrument ensemble and in timbric pairings. Rich with lyrical virtuosity, Saint-Saëns's cello Concerto no. 2 abounds with solo passages that will fully highlight the artistic personality of Luigi Piovano, first cello in the Santa Cecilia orchestra. Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare will be making his debut on Santa Cecilia's podium.
