  • Ravel Miroirs     Une barque sur l'ocean / Alborada del Gracioso
  • Bernstein Serenade, after Plato's Symposium
  • Sibelius Sinfonia n. 7
  • Ravel La Valse

Our gaze turns to the evocative suggestions of the twentieth century, through the elegant expressiveness of Ravel, one of the composers in whom the varied languages of music come together in personal reinterpretations of diverse styles. Miroirs and La Valse, both composed in the full creative ferment that provided the backdrop for Paris in the first decades of the century, represent two examples of how Ravel's music is full of the harmonic and timbric wonders that personalize the Basque composer's sound palate. Intense, melodic, seductive, the Serenade for violin and orchestra was composed by Leonard Bernstein, one of the twentieth century's most beloved conductors; an honorary conductor at Santa Cecilia, he regularly split his time between composing and the podium. The Serenade is inspired by the Symposium, Plato's work in which Athenian intellectuals express their opinion on love. Last comes the pure poetry of Symphony no. 7 by Jean Sibelius, the only Finnish composer of international appeal. His music evokes suggestive Nordic landscapes and the ancient songs of popular tradition. Janine Jansen, one of the great contemporary violinists, will be lending her efforts. Her career took wing after her debut at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw in 1997, taking her to the most prestigious venues. A welcome guest at Accademia di Santa Cecilia's concert seasons, she has established a relationship of continuity and mutual esteem with our institution - a relationship that gave rise to the recent recording, for DECCA, of Brahms's Violin Concerto, conducted by Antonio Pappano.
