Daniele Gatti - who served as Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia's Musical Director from 1992 to 1997 and is currently chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw - will mark his return with a performance of Robert Schumann's oratory Paradise and the Peri.

Although seemingly quite current given modern-day events, this highly symbolic story is in fact set in the ancient and fabulous East. It is the tale of a Peri, a fairy of Iranian myth, nourished by the perfume of flowers. Expelled from Paradise, she can regain entry only when she brings back to heaven the dearest gift of all. The Peri flies over the regions of India and gathers the last drops of blood of a hero killed by the tyrant of Gazna, but the blessed do not consider this offering sufficient to redeem her. The Peri then descends back to Earth; rising from the banks of the Nile is the final sigh of a maiden who has sacrificed her life for love, by joining her lips to those of her plague-stricken beloved. Again, the blessed ones reject the gift, as it is not enough to placate the divine spirit. Sad and melancholy, the Peri takes flight again, over the valley of Baalbeck, towards the temple of the Sun. Among the minarets of Syria, she glimpses a child singing the evening prayers; beside him, a violent bandit is moved to tears by this vision: the tears of remorse and repentance. The Peri collects these tears and brings them to heaven; the deep sentiment of the "sinner" converted by the prayer of the innocent reopens the gates paradise, where the Peri is finally welcomed back from her exile.
