Michael Tilson Thomas direttore
Katia e Marielle Labèque pianoforti
  • Mozart Concerto per due pianoforti K 365
  • Mahler Sinfonia n. 5

On a number of occasions, cinema has appropriated pieces from the symphonic tradition, binding images to sound commentary. This is the case with the Adagietto from Mahler's Fifth Symphony, used by Luchino Visconti in Death in Venice, which brought this piece fame with the general public. Michael Tilson Thomas will be on the podium; an interpreter of Mahler, his eclectic personality was shaped under the tutelage of great masters - prominent among whom was his mentor, Leonard Bernstein. Tilson Thomas is currently music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, which he has led since 1995. A composer, an advocate of music education projects for young people, and the winner of eleven Grammy Awards and of numerous prizes and honours, the American conductor says that Mahler's music shaped his "way of seeing the world." He will be joined by two sisters, Katia and Marielle Labèque, tireless figures on the international scene and promoters of the enjoyment of music from every era, including contemporary. Coming to the international limelight when still quite young, the Labèque sisters return after a five-year absence with Concert for two pianos K 365 written by Mozart for himself and his sister Nannerl in March 1779. A virtuoso concerto laden with an intense liveliness, in it Mozart expresses all his sensitivity and imagination - perfect for the effervescent verve of this duo who exude positive energy from every pore.
