Mikko Franck, Principal Guest Conductor of Orchestra di Santa Cecilia, is presenting a programme of music from the French area.
On the programme, Ravel and Franck (Cesar, of course!) are joined by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, one of the most acclaimed and sought-after performers of Ravel's marvellous Piano Concerto in G major. Real objects of curiosity are the three short Cantatas, La nuit, L'aurore, and Tout est lumiere, composed by a young Maurice Ravel for the Prix de Rome. Despite these pieces' extraordinary crafting as performed with the participation of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia Chorus, Ravel was unsuccessful in his attempts at the scholarship that would have allowed him to stay at Villa Medici in Rome. The French composer's musical style is clear: elegance, colours, nuances, delicate and evocative atmospheres. In Franck's Symphony in D minor, a contemporary critic saw the fusion between the dynamic lyricism of Germany and the sensitive clarity of France. And in fact, this great classic of nineteenth-century symphony-writing has a structural solidity that traces its origins to Beethoven, while also possessing an entirely different shading inspired - with full Romantic conviction - by Liszt and Wagner, reinterpreted with taste and sensitivity.
