  • Dvorak Concerto per violino
  • Prokofiev Romeo e Giulietta: Suite dal balletto

Of the latest-generation conductors, the Czech Jakub Hrůša is one of those in greatest demand in the world. At Santa Cecilia, he astounded everyone with an unforgettable performance of Smetana's Má vlast ("My homeland"). This convincing debut gave rise to a collaboration that has been renewed from season to season. At the concerts during these days. Hrůša makes a partial return to his "natural" repertoire, that of his homeland, Bohemia, where Antonín Dvořák holds a place of prominence. The latter's Violin Concerto was written for Joseph Joachim (the same violinist to whom Brahms's Concerto was dedicated) but the piece failed to win favour with the German virtuoso, who never performed it, finding its flaws precisely in those aspects that we enjoy today: richness of expression, heartfelt lyricism, original harmonies, and novel melodic ideas. Joshua Bell is the perfect artist to imbue the piece with all the impassioned virtuosity needed to recreate its most authentic features. Staying in the same geographical area, Hrůša opens the concert with five dazzling Hungarian Dances by Brahms, orchestrated by Dvořák. The programme closes with a Suite (prepared by Hrůša himself) from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet, a rousing challenge for the orchestra, for a conductor of outstanding quality like Hrůša, and for listeners who never tire of the inventions and the melodic and rhythmic insights of one of the Russian composer's most popular and beloved scores.
