  • Mozart Grande Messa K 427
  • Mozart Sinfonia n. 41 K 551 "Jupiter"

Ton Koopman, a fine interpreter of old music, makes his return to the podium of the Santa Cecilia Chorus and Orchestra with an "all Mozart" programme. Mozart began composing his Great Mass in C minor K.427 to fulfil a vow he had made so a sick Constanze, who later became his wife, would get better, and to reach Salzburg and introduce her to his father Leopold, who was firmly opposed to the union. Once Constanze healed and his father's consent was obtained (although the couple had already been married a day earlier), the Mass was set aside, remaining in fact incomplete. It is still a masterpiece that in its scope, inventiveness, and beauty outclasses Mozart's youthful church output and heralds the extraordinary achievement of his Requiem. His Symphony no. 41 (the Jupiter Symphony - the name was coined not by Mozart but by the publisher Salomon who had rightly seen in it a divine grandeur, so to speak) is a supreme affirmation of the sonata form revitalized through Mozart's dazzling inventiveness, opening spaces for new expressive outcomes that were at the time beyond all imagination, and that make this symphony to this day (and, it bears saying, for all time to come), along with the others in the final cycle composed by Mozart, an absolute masterpiece.
