  • Brahms Concerto per pianoforte n. 2
  • Brahms Sinfonia n. 2

A winning pair, on both the poster and the stage. Two of Brahms's greatest works - Piano Concerto no. 2 and Symphony no. 2 - performed by two giants of the piano and the baton: Yefim Bronfman and Daniele Gatti. The programme allows audiences to hear two of the Hamburg composer's renowned pieces, while appreciating their similarities and differences. The first of these is considered one of the most demanding in the entire piano concerto repertoire. The solemn flow, the broad lines, and the grand gesture characterizing all the movements of this masterpiece are achieved by a score in which the piano, although still in its prominent role, is placed constantly in a relationship with the orchestra, playing in close dialogue and on equal footing with it, in a gruelling test of technical difficulties for the soloist. A similar solemnity can be heard in the Second Symphony, although the romantic impetus that pervades the Concerto appears tempered here in a warm, calm, cantabile lyricism that makes this Symphony more reminiscent of Beethoven's Pastorale. Like peaks soaring over the surrounding nature, moments of impassioned romantic spirit abound, culminating in the last movement and particularly in the finale, in which the orchestra hurls itself into a resounding, exhilarating, triumphant finish. Yefim Bronfman has performed the Brahms Concerto with all the greatest conductors of our time, and with the world's leading orchestras, while Daniele Gatti is known for his particular affinity with the German and late-Romantic repertoire.
