Antonio Pappano - Lisa Batiashvili
Friday 10 May 2019
Sala Santa Cecilia at 20.30 - turn V-V2
Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
Antonio Pappano direttore
Lisa Batiashvili violino

Lisa Batiashvili and Antonio Pappano have over time cemented an important artistic alliance, enlivened by the joy of making music together and by their common intent of honouring it to the highest possible degree. Past occasions that have brought the two performers together, at Santa Cecilia and on tour, have been memorable for their beautiful performances, and for their technical and expressive mastery of great violin concertos. This was the case for Sibelius and Tchaikovsky, and so it will be for Bartók's Concerto no. 1. A youthful piece written in 1908, the Concerto was inspired by the composer's liaison with a young violinist who jealously guarded it. The piece was made public only in 1958, when it finally had its world premiere. While positive in tone, the Concerto remains one of Bartók's most disillusioned works. In the first part of the programme, Pappano offers us a performance of the original version of Mussorgsky's famed Night on Bald Mountain. Far from Rimsky-Korsakov's glorious arrangement in its frequently performed version (the one we hear in Disney's Fantasia, for example), Night on Bald Mountain in its original form reclaims its expressive force, and its sparkling yet disturbing hue. Scheherazade, on the other hand, is Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic masterwork: a musical reading of One Thousand and One Nights, a journey through the many stories that are told, but also and above all a soundtrack of the East, a place of fable and legend, of mystery and wonder - a place that Rimsky-Korsakov's lush score brings alive in all its charm and exoticism.
