  • Brahms Sinfonia n. 3

The Swede Magnus Lindberg, one of our era's greatest composers, has chosen to respond to the demand for a new work to commemorate the anniversary of the end of the First World War by setting a poem written in 1916 by Swedish-speaking Finnish poet Edith Södergran, and borrowing its title: Triumph to Exist. "Despite the world events of the time, which are surely the unspoken background to this poem, its meditation on the transience of life is a defiantly positive affirmation of the joy of existence," said Lindberg, adding: "For me, it says something deeply essential about the tragedy of millions of young men that gave their lives in that useless slaughter. They were deprived of the simple human triumph to merely exist." Commissioned by the London Philharmonic, the work is seeing its Italian debut as part of Music Up Close, a European project promoted by Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Making his return to the Santa Cecilia podium, David Afkham is also offering two nineteenth-century masterpieces: Richard Wagner's Prelude and Death of Isolde, with the tonal ambiguities and harmonic suspensions that were to change the music to come, and Johannes Brahms's Symphony no. 3, which, while musically fleeing from the disintegration wrought by Wagner, is projected into a "fin de siècle" atmosphere of autumnal twilight.
