Everything starts from the text, from the word, from the single term. Giuseppe Verdi, the composer of the "scenic word," deals with the liturgical text starting precisely from the single word upon which he builds his highly personal reflection on the end of life, the basis for a Requiem. Terrifying and painfully moving, the resulting images of sound make it one of the greatest masterworks of its kind. Verdi gives voice to an astonished, bewildered humanity that wonders about the mystery of death, finding no answers even in the uncompromising nature of the text. It is that human shudder, that awareness of the impossibility of approaching so great a question, that penetrates all his music, that characterizes his outbursts and his yearnings for transcendence - always afflicted, however, by a creeping sense of doubt, emptiness, and the "annihilating nothingness of thought." Verdi remains consistent with himself and his world, and the music's stylistic traits, although close to those of the musical theatre, give the work an immediacy, a sincerity, an expression that are those of so many characters in his theatre, and are nameless here: these are human beings caught up in the supreme moment. Humanity will be represented on this occasion by the Israeli Daniel Oren, conducting the Santa Cecilia Orchestra and Chorus, the Italian Eleonora Buratto and Francesco Demuro, the Russian Ekaterina Semenchuk and the Estonian Ain Anger.
