Beethoven, Concerto per violino
Saturday 15 February 2020
Sala Santa Cecilia at 18 - turn S-S1
Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
Gianandrea Noseda direttore
Leonidas Kavakos violino

The all-Beethoven series that Leonidas Kavakos is presenting at Santa Cecilia over the course of 2020 (with the entire cycle of Violin Sonatas - next appointment: 25 March) absolutely had to include a performance of the Violin Concerto par excellence, perhaps one of the most beloved pieces in the entire solo repertoire. On the other hand, how can we not be enchanted by the lyricism of the violin, by the expansive, serene cantabile, but also by the evocativeness of virtuoso passages? This is even more the case when we consider that it all begins and takes shape from those timpani beats opening the first movement. Just a few notes - followed by the miracle created by a genius whose authoritative grandeur, 250 years after his birth, is renewed with every hearing. Led by Gianadrea Noseda, one of the Italian conductors most admired and active internationally, the programme concludes with Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 3 (the apocryphal title "Polish symphony" was given it on the occasion of its London premiere, for its last movement, "In tempo di Polacca"). A brilliant, extroverted work, although far from the autobiographical emphasis of the Fourth and Sixth and from the majesty of the Fifth, it is still to be seen as indicative of Tchaikovsky's extraordinary merits as a great orchestrator and creator of themes and melodies.
