Daniele Gatti: R. Strauss / Mahler
Thursday 27 February 2020
Sala Santa Cecilia at 19.30 - turn G-G1
Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
Daniele Gatti direttore
Alessio Allegrini corno

During the second week of concerts, Daniele Gatti, joined by Alessio Allegrini, Accademia di Santa Cecilia's Principal Horn Soloist, grapples with a wholly different repertoire, shifting to Mitteleuropa with pieces by Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. It begins with Strauss's Horn Concerto no. 2, among the most demanding compositions for the solo instrument. The son of one of the most renowned horn players of his time, Strauss pours all his knowledge of the instrument and his compositional mastery into this score, creating a facetted gem: virtuosity, lyricism, modernity, and a look to the past and the inevitable model of Mozart's Horn Concertos.
Now famed for its languid Adagietto used by Luchino Visconti in Death in Venice, Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony marked a turning point in the composer's production. As Quirino Principe has written, Symphony no. 5 "traverses, at varying speed and at a snail's pace at times, immense expanses on the horizon, and in all the symphony's formal elements, the horizontal arrangement prevails." Perhaps residing in these very characteristics are the reasons that have over time brought increasing popularity to Mahler's music - a music located in a space-time dimension that modern life, in its dizzying and breathless unfolding, has excluded forever.
