Antonio Pappano, who this year is celebrating his fifteenth anniversary with Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, has accepted the Roman institution’s invitation to confirm his engagement as Music Director through December, 2023.
The relationship between Rome and Maestro Pappano dates back to 2005, and has been punctuated by major success and achievements, both personal and for Santa Cecilia’s ensembles: from international prizes and honours, as well as tours visiting the main temples of music around the world, to prestigious recordings with leading industry labels.
"Fifteen years have passed since I was appointed Music Director of Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and extending my engagement in an institution I love and in a city that has welcomed me with open arms is a source of great pride for me,” said Antonio Pappano. "I have many friends and loved ones in this city, and leading this Orchestra, with such a high level of professionalism, gives me a great sense of peace, and makes me feel part of a big family. During these years, I have joined the Orchestra and Chorus as we have attained great achievements, performed in the world’s most important venues, and recorded with the finest artists on the international scene. We work with a sense of purpose every day, and will continue to do so, in order to offer to ourselves – and above all to this city and to our beloved public – the level of artistry and emotion we all deserve.”
The news was announced to Maestro Pappano and the Orchestra by President-Superintendent Michele dall’Ongaro during the final session for the album of Donizetti’s La trilogia Tudor that Pappano, the Chorus, and the Orchestra are recording for Warner Classics.
"It is with great pride that I can announce that Maestro Pappano has accepted our proposal to extend his engagement as Music Director of Accademia di Santa Cecilia through December, 2023," said Michele dall’Ongaro, "This is the fourth time we have extended the engagement since I’ve been President, and this is due to the great harmony we at this institution have with the Maestro’s vision of music, how to offer it, and its function so profoundly linked to sharing values and ideas. The increasingly esteemed artistic achievements – attained through the enormous efforts of our Orchestra and Chorus and taking concrete shape in our concert season, our many important international tours, and our award-winning recordings – are the result of this collaboration, one that also brings conductors and soloists of undisputed international prestige to our ensembles. Continuing this collaboration thus means developing this path of growth, while confirming our increasingly acknowledged role as a touchstone in the city and on the international landscape."
