Prokofiev Festival

??? Paragrafo[1]/Immagine/Link ???

Of all the 20th century composers, Sergei Prokofiev – by virtue of the spontaneity and joy of his musical ideas, enriched by melodic and rhythmic inspiration that is distinctly modern, yet immediately engaging – remains a unique case, the most authentic heir to the Russian tradition that has long had the symphony, solo concerto and ballet as its cornerstones. The composer’s entire body of symphonic work will flow through the skilled hands of conductor Valery Gerviev, together with our own Orchestra and St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra – making this a wonderful opportunity to rediscover, through the composer’s best-known scores, his truly inexhaustible creative vein and the often surprising contrasts in his inventiveness.

In the final concert, Gerviev will conduct dazzling virtuoso Leonidas Kavakos in the Violin Concerto No. 1 – which has been a mainstay in the repertoires of most violinists of note ever since it was debuted in 1923 – along with the imposing Ivan the Terrible, the second score born of Prokofiev’s historic collaboration with director Sergei Eisenstein (for whom the composer also wrote the superb soundtrack for the film Alexander Nevsky).
