NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE
ACCADEMIA NAZIONALE DI SANTA CECILIA
FROM THE 2024/2025 SEASON

The Orchestra and Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is delighted to announce Daniel Harding as its next Music Director, effective from October 2024 for an initial five-year term.

Daniel Harding succeeds Sir Antonio Pappano, Music Director from 2005 to 2023, who will become Director Emeritus. One of the oldest musical institutions in the world, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia boasts a long line of prestigious Principal Conductors and Music Directors, including Igor Markevich, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Daniele Gatti and Myung Whun Chung.

International public competition

Fondazione Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is announcing an international public competition for the hiring, under open-ended contract, of chorus performers to be assigned to the following professional positions:

  • MEZZO-SOPRANO (2 positions)
  • CONTRALTO (1 position)
  • BARITONE (1 position)
  • TENOR (2 positions)

International composition competition

THE COMPOSER ENRICO SCACCAGLIA WON THE SECOND EDITION OF THE “LUCIANO BERIO” COMPETITION
Great success for the second edition of the Luciano Berio International Composition Competition, organized and promoted by the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, in collaboration with the Luciano Berio Study Centre, the Filarmonica della Scala Orchestra, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the Teatro Carlo Felice, the Universal Edition (EU) and with the support of SIAE – Italian Society of Authors and Publishers and the Boris Christoff Foundation. The Competition is a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions.
The prestigious international jury, chaired by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and made of composers Luca Francesconi (Italy), Tania León (United States), Michael Jarrell (Switzerland) and Hilda Paredes (Mexico/UK), after analyzing all the scores submitted, has assigned the First Prize to Enrico Scaccaglia, born in Parma, Italy, in 1989.

Enrico Scaccaglia will be awarded a commission worth 20,000 euros for the composition of an original piece for symphony orchestra which will be performed in world premiere as part of the 2024-2025 Symphony Season of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and will be subsequently included in the programming of the other partner orchestras.

 
The jury also assigned two honorable mentions: one to Annachiara Gedda and the other one to Chia-Ying Lin.

The Orchestra

The Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia was the first orchestra in Italy to devote itself exclusively to the symphonic repertoire.

The Chorus

The origins of the multi-secular Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia are closely linked to choral singing: in the second half of the 1500’s, several Chapel-masters and Choristers formed an association, electing as President Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina

The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia concert hall is the at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone (Rome – Viale Pietro De Coubertin, 34) designed by architect Renzo Piano, one of the largest music complexes in the world today. Legal Headquarter is at Via Vittoria 6.

Besides events and concerts, the Auditorium houses a modern Multi-media Library for consulting the Accademia’s historical-musical patrimony, which has been digitalized with the most modern technology and catalogued according to criteria currently used by cultural libraries, archivists and audio-visual specialists.

Museum of Musical Instruments

The Musical Instruments Museum of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (MUSA), holds one of the foremost collections of instruments in Italy. Its most valuable pieces are now on display to the public in its exhibition gallery.
